Letter from Martha Graham to Agnes DeMille
There is only one you – and that is your strength!
There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.
If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is; nor how valuable it is; nor how it compares with other expressions.
It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.
Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction; a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.
I am a lucky, lucky man. I have two of Sonya’s pieces in my home. Her “Coconuts” and Pink Sea urchins”. They fill that part of the house with a lovely, lively Caribbean light and everyone smiles immediately on seeing them. I am a lucky, lucky man.
I am so happy I went! Blown away! Inspiration gained, appreciation felt.
You are an amazing woman Sonya Sanchez Arias! Amazing Artist! So passionate. So informed and yet so “real”. Trinidad is lucky you chose to share this year-long effort with us. All that hard work paid off. Absolutely no shame in saying… if I had the money I would be hard-pressed to have to choose from such a terrific body of work. That worn fence that Nando found that you repurposed as the frame! Brilliant!
Without ever looking at your work I know they’re beautiful. After looking at them, they’re not only beautiful but outrageous! Keep up the great work and best of luck on your future endeavors.
I remember the work from your Earthling exhibition. Its impact then has only deepened now – timelessness is Art with a capital letter.
As always, your talent, passion, creativity and attention to detail never ceases to amaze me. You are amazing!
I went to see your exhibition at the museum. Amazing! Really interesting and creative. Congratulations. You are a true artist!
You must see for yourself. Worth your time. Will make you smile. So refreshing and exciting! Visit “Fragments” an exhibition by Sonya Sanchez Arias at Y Gallery in Woodbrook. I have never seen anything like it in Trinidad. Thank you for sharing your work with us Sonya. Scenes of Trinidad in a whole new light.
Love your work. You’re ahead of the times girl!

I think your work is wonderful! Your choice of locations and subject matter is so Caribbean. The effect of your work is powerful and fun, and the influence of your beautiful surroundings and your upbringing in Trinidad is seen in you and your work.
